Arles near the mouth of the Rhone delata in Provence was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire. It was also the starting point of the southernmost French route to Compostela. The cathedral housed the relics of Saint Trophimus, first bishop of the city, allegedly sent by Saint Peter himself, to evangelise the region. The heavily sculpted facade draws heavily on the style of Classical Antiquity. The central tympanum features an Apocalyptic vision of Christ in Majesty. The large sculpted reliefs on the first level are the Apostles. Saint James holding the Gospel inscribed Iacobus. Trophimus is included in the college of the Apostles, indentifiable by his bishop's mitre.

GTR-DVD-1142 - A beautiful fountain with an Egyptian obelisk graces the Place De La République in the heart of Arles, an historic and charming small town in the south of France. Next to the City Hall is the Romanic Saint Trophime Cathedral with its splendid church porch that dates back to the 12th century. The town's Amphitheatre is the region's greatest building that has survived from the time of the Roman Empire and it is also the most important arena in the former Gallic colony. Three watchtowers that date back to the Middle Ages were left in tact by archaeologists as a reminder of the fortifications of the beautiful amphitheatre. Arles and its magnificent cathedral soon became one of the Romans' most favoured towns and was referred to as 'Little Rome in Gaul' when more than twenty thousand spectators witnessed savage gladiatorial battle in its Amphiteatre. Today Arles is closely associated with the name of world famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. He completed around four hundred paintings in the town. A visit to Arles is like travelling back in time but with all the unique atmosphere of the present. On évoque souvent Arles pour la richesse de son patrimoine antique (monuments romains) et roman, ses monuments inscrits au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco en 1981 dont l'Amphithéâtre romain (les arènes), le Théâtre antique, les Cryptoportiques, les Thermes romains de Constantin, les vestiges du cirque romain, le cloître Saint-Trophime, le portail de Saint-Trophime et les Alyscamps, qui sont le départ du chemin d'Arles, l'une des trois voies menant à St Jacques de Compostelle.

Arles est sur le Rhône, là où commence son delta, et constitue donc la porte de la Camargue.Arles (en occitan provençal : Arle [ˈaʀle] Vincent van Gogh (30 mars 1853 à Groot-Zundert aux Pays-Bas - 29 juillet 1890 à Auvers-sur-Oise) est un peintre et dessinateur néerlandais. Son œuvre, presque inconnue à sa mort, annonce le fauvisme et l'expressionnisme. Alexandre-César-Léopold Bizet, né en 1838 et mort en 1875, inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise, est un compositeur français du XIXe siècle.Je n'ai pas trouvé l'arlésienne alors j'ai mis Carmen (l'aragonaise).Gare aux oreilles !!!!!
